Tips to present the Facebook Ads data in Data Studio

Google Data Studio is the data visualisation tool by Google that helps you track and monitor your data in one place. Similar to Tableau, it enables you to create visual representations of your data which makes it much easier for your clients to understand.

Facebook advertising can be overwhelming for clients to understand, so including the data in Google Data Studio and presenting it in an easy-to-read format helps the client understand the effectiveness of your ads and means you can optimise them accordingly. Let’s dive in!

How to Connect Facebook Ads Data to Google Data Studio

First, you need to log in to Google Data Studio and create a new dashboard. Next, click on “Connect to Data Sources” to import your Facebook Ads data. You can connect to the data in two ways- via Google Sheets or directly via Facebook Ads. Once you have connected the data source you will be able to input this into your report for different metrics, graphs and tables, making your data clear, concise and aesthetically pleasing.

If you have multiple clients, you will also be able to manage multiple data sources at the same time, so you can manage all of your reports in the same place.

Create a Facebook Ad Report

Even if you don’t intend to create a full Ad Report, but just want to import the data into Google Data Studio, you need to create an Ad Report. To create an Ad Report, go to your Ads Manager and select “Reports” from the sidebar. From there, you can select “Create New Report”.

You can create as many reports as necessary and you have the option to build a custom report or follow templates that are suggested by Google. If you want to make a report with your own branding, you can create a template and change the colours and fonts to match your own. You can also import images to your report if necessary.

Importing Facebook data into Data Studio

The best way to import your Facebook data directly into data studio is to add the partner connector ‘Supermetrics’ which connects directly to your Facebook Ad accounts and can pull the data through to any part of your report instantly.

Do this by opening a document in Data studio and clicking on ‘Create new data source’ in the bottom right-hand corner. From the menu of data studio connectors, select ‘Facebook Ads by Supermetrics’ and authorise the connector.

You should then be able to select the ad account that you want to pull the data from, click ‘connect’ and then remember to rename the data source so you know which is which – it can get confusing if you have multiple data sources called ‘Facebook Ads’.

If you’re creating a report via Google Sheets, you’ll need to import the data into a new sheet. Once you have imported the data, click on “File” and “Publish to the Web”. Select “Get Report URLs” and click “Next”. Select “Save to My Drive”, enter a name for the report, and click “Create” – voila!

Add custom dimensions and metrics for better reporting

In the Google Data Studio dashboard, click on “Dimensions” to add data that will help you to better understand your Facebook Ads data. For example, you can add the “Audience” data to understand the demographics of your audience. Similarly, you can add the “Ad Set” data to understand how your ad set is performing.

Within the reports, you can select the “Metrics” tab to insert specific metrics into your reports, such as return on investment (ROI), cost per acquisition (CPA) and website conversions. You can adjust the date range that these metrics track by selecting a custom date range and even comparing it to the previous month, so you can see how much your campaigns have improved or not.

Presenting the data to a client

If you found data studio confusing at first, imagine how it feels to a client who may not even understand Facebook Ads. It’s crucial that you make the report as accurate and easy to understand as possible so that the client can clearly see how their ads are performing.

To do this, it is useful to present all the key metrics in the first slide followed by slides with visual aids such as graphs and tables to show the range in demographics and ad performance. When writing text in the report, keep it short and snappy and provide a longer summary outside of the report to avoid overwhelming the client with information.

The Bottom Line

Facebook Ads can be very effective if used correctly. Google Data Studio is a great tool for visualising and understanding your Facebook Ads data. By connecting Facebook Ads data to Google Data Studio, you can create visual representations of your Facebook Ads data and understand the effectiveness of your ads and optimise them accordingly. Moreover, you can also monitor your website’s performance and track conversion rates by adding Google Analytics data to Google Data Studio.
