Encrypt backups in iTunes

The encryption function of the backup in iTunes locks and encrypts the data. Encrypted backups created with iTunes can include items that are not found in unencrypted backups of iTunes:

  • Saved passwords;
  • Wi-Fi settings;
  • The history of visiting websites;

iTunes does not encrypt the default backups. To encrypt a backup in iTunes for the first time, you need to enable the encrypted backup function, which is password-protected. After that, iTunes will automatically encrypt the data backup for this device. If you lose or forget the password, you will not be able to recover your data or disable encryption of backups.

Data from the encrypted backup cannot be recovered without entering a password. In iOS 11 or later, you can create an encrypted backup of your device by resetting your password. To do this, you need to do the following:

On your iOS device, go to Settings> General> Reset.

Click Reset All Settings and enter the iOS password.

Follow the instructions to reset the settings. This will not affect the data or passwords of users, but will reset the settings such as the brightness level of the display, the program positions on the Home screen and wallpaper. The password for encryption of backup copies will also be deleted.

Connect the device again to iTunes and create an encrypted backup.

You cannot use encrypted backups that were created earlier, but you can create a backup of current data in iTunes and set a new password for it.

If your device has iOS 10 or earlier, you cannot reset the password. In this case, try the following:

  • If your device was set up by someone else, find out the password from it.
  • Use the backup created with iCloud, not iTunes. If you do not have a backup in iCloud, you can create one.
  • Try using an earlier backup in iTunes.
